CHAPTER 9

Or CHAPTER 109: THE LAST FEW BILLION YEARS

(3 BILLION- 300 MILLION YEARS AGO)

Model of proterozoic life, 600 MYA

The “news” of the last few billion years is dominated by the maturation of life.  In this chapter of the past, our ancestors evolved from bacteria to back-boned animals!  Almost all of our major body features, from the skin to the brain, evolved during this time.  So did self-awareness and primordial behaviors such as mating, hunting, and communication.  This chapter will discuss the basics of evolution as well as the particular biohistory of human ancestors.  The history of life in the last few billion years is intertwined with geological history.  Conditions in the physical environment had a two-way relationship with living things.
